The divorce certificates and updating your CNIC

After a divorce or Khulla in Pakistan you end up with two certificates, both from the Union Council: a certificate that the divorce has taken effect (after the 90 days), and the computerised Divorce Registration Certificate produced through NADRA's system, often called the "NADRA divorce certificate". Your CNIC is then updated at NADRA. Check names, CNIC numbers and dates on both before you leave the counter.

How you get them

The route decides the starting document: the husband’s written talaq notice, the Family Court’s Khulla or dissolution decree, or a mutual divorce deed. In each case the Union Council Chairman processes it, the 90 days run from the day he receives it, and the certificates follow. The full step-by-step process is in our Union Council divorce guide; for Khulla problems, see after the Khulla decree.

What to check before you leave the counter

  • Both spouses’ names spelled exactly as on their CNICs, with fathers’ names.
  • Both CNIC numbers.
  • The date the notice or decree was received and the date the divorce took effect (at least 90 days later, or later still after a pregnancy).
  • The Union Council’s name and the signature or stamp.
  • That the details match the Nikahnama and, if you have one, the NADRA marriage certificate.

A mistake found later usually means another trip, and can hold up a CNIC update, a new Nikah or a visa.

Updating your CNIC and family record

The certificates do not change your CNIC by themselves. To show your marital status correctly on your CNIC and family registration certificate, apply at a NADRA registration centre with the computerised divorce certificate. Do this before applying for a new passport or a visa that asks about marital status.

Lost certificate or a mistake on it

Because the computerised certificate comes from NADRA’s system, the Union Council can usually print another copy; take your CNIC and the earlier details. A spelling mistake made by the Union Council is corrected there, with the documents that show the right spelling. If the mistake is in the court decree or talaq deed itself, that document has to be corrected first.

Using the certificate abroad

Embassies, immigration offices and registry offices abroad usually ask for the computerised divorce certificate, sometimes with the decree or talaq deed. If they need it in English or another language, get a certified, notarised translation. Always check the receiving authority’s own list; requirements differ by country and purpose.

Remarriage

Before a new Nikah, a Nikah registrar will normally want to see proof that the earlier marriage has ended, usually the divorce certificate. Remember that the divorce takes effect only after the 90 days, and that iddat must also be complete.

Common questions

Is the NADRA divorce certificate issued at a NADRA office?

Usually not. It is issued by the Union Council or local authority through NADRA's linked system. NADRA offices update your CNIC once you have it.

How soon after the 90 days will I get it?

It depends on the Union Council. Apply in writing as soon as the 90 days have passed and keep the receiving stamp.

I live abroad. Can someone collect it for me?

Yes, a representative with a Special Power of Attorney can usually apply and collect it.

Do I need both certificates?

Keep both. Authorities in Pakistan and abroad most often ask for the computerised certificate, but some also want proof of the date the divorce took effect.
