Divorce when you or your spouse live abroad
Yes. A husband living abroad can complete a talaq under Pakistani law without travelling: he signs a written talaq deed and a Special Power of Attorney (through NADRA online or a Pakistan Mission), and his representative gives the written notice to the Union Council in Pakistan, with a copy to the wife. The talaq takes effect 90 days later unless revoked. A wife abroad who has received a talaq can also bring it to the Union Council herself.

Divorce certificate from abroad, step by step
For a husband living abroad who has pronounced talaq and needs it registered in Pakistan. Choose the step you are at.
Where are you now?
Talaq deed and power of attorney
The lawyer drafts the written talaq deed and a Special Power of Attorney so someone in Pakistan can deliver the notice and follow the Union Council process.
Next, sign and attest both through NADRA online or the Pakistan Mission.
Signed and attested abroad
The power of attorney is executed through NADRA's online service or at the Pakistan Mission, and the originals or verified copies reach the attorney.
Next, the notice goes to the Union Council.
Notice to the Union Council and the wife
The attorney gives written notice to the Chairman of the Union Council where the wife lives, and a copy to the wife.
Next, the Arbitration Council and the 90 days.
Arbitration Council and 90 days
The Chairman forms an Arbitration Council within 30 days. Unless revoked, the talaq takes effect 90 days after the Chairman received the notice, or when a pregnancy ends if later.
Next, the Union Council certificate.
Union Council and NADRA certificates
The Union Council issues its certificate and the computerised Divorce Registration Certificate from NADRA's system. The attorney can collect both.
Next, translation if the certificate is needed abroad.
Certified translation for use abroad
If an authority abroad needs it in English or another language, we prepare a certified, notarised translation of the divorce certificate.
This is the last step. Check the receiving authority's own checklist.

Common questions
Can I give talaq at the Pakistan Embassy?
You can sign the power of attorney at the Pakistan Mission, but the talaq notice itself goes to the Union Council in Pakistan.
My husband sent talaq by WhatsApp from abroad. Am I divorced?
The message is evidence that he pronounced talaq, but the legal process is complete only after notice to the Union Council and the 90 days. You can report it to the Union Council yourself.
Do I need to travel to Pakistan to divorce?
Usually not. A representative with a Special Power of Attorney can file the notice and collect the certificates.
Can the talaq be revoked from abroad?
Yes, within the 90 days. Tell the Union Council in writing, through your representative, so the record is clear.
