About this checker
This checker lists the documents usually asked for when a court marriage (a Nikah solemnised and registered with a lawyer's help) is arranged in Pakistan. It covers couples where both are Pakistani, where one or both are overseas Pakistanis, and where one is a foreign national, and it adjusts for previous marriages and for where the Nikah will take place.
It does not decide whether you can marry. Both of you must meet the minimum age that applies where the Nikah takes place and must consent freely. Registration follows the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961: the Nikah Registrar registers the marriage with the Union Council, which then issues the NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate.

Court marriage step by step
A "court marriage" is a Nikah solemnised and registered with a lawyer's help, not a separate civil marriage. Choose the step you are at to see what happens next.
Where are you now?
Check eligibility
Both parties must meet the minimum age that applies where the Nikah takes place (18 for both in Islamabad, Punjab and Sindh) and must consent freely. See the age table below.
Next, gather identity documents and agree the Haq Mehr.
Documents and Haq Mehr
Original CNICs (or passports for foreign nationals), photographs, and the witnesses' CNICs. Decide the Haq Mehr and how it is paid before the Nikahnama is filled in.
Next, your lawyer prepares any affidavits advised in your case.
Affidavits where advised
Depending on the circumstances, your lawyer may advise sworn statements, for example confirming free will and marital status.
Next, the Nikah is solemnised.
Nikah before a Nikah Registrar
The Nikah is solemnised in the presence of witnesses and the Nikahnama is completed and signed. Read every column before signing.
Next, the Nikahnama is registered with the Union Council.
Union Council registration
The Nikah Registrar registers the marriage with the Union Council, which records it.
Next, obtain the computerised Marriage Registration Certificate.
NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC)
The Union Council issues the computerised Marriage Registration Certificate through NADRA. Keep the Nikahnama and the MRC together; many authorities ask for both.
This is the last step. For use abroad, see certified Nikahnama translation.
| Province / territory | Bride | Groom | Law |
|---|---|---|---|
| Islamabad (ICT) | 18 | 18 | Islamabad Capital Territory Child Marriage Restraint Act, 2025 |
| Punjab | 18 | 18 | Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Act, 2026 |
| Sindh | 18 | 18 | Sindh Child Marriages Restraint Act, 2013 |
| Balochistan | 18 | 18 | Balochistan Child Marriages Restraint Act, 2025 |
| Khyber Pakhtunkhwa | 16 | 18 | Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929 (no provincial Act yet) |
The law of the place where the Nikah is solemnised applies. Under-age marriage is an offence; it is not a ground for a court marriage. Challenges to the age-18 laws are pending before the Federal Shariat Court.

What Is Court Marriage in Pakistan?
The expression “court marriage” is commonly used in Pakistan for a marriage solemnized by the free consent of two legally competent adults with the assistance of a lawyer, followed by completion of the Nikah Nama and registration through the competent Nikah Registrar and Union Council.
In most Muslim court-marriage matters, the marriage is not solemnized by a judge inside a courtroom. The Nikah is performed in accordance with Islamic requirements, legal affidavits are prepared where needed, the prescribed Nikah Nama is signed, and the marriage is registered under the applicable family laws.
Is Court Marriage Legal in Pakistan?
Yes. A marriage entered into by legally competent persons through free consent is lawful when the applicable legal and religious requirements are fulfilled. Family disagreement by itself does not invalidate an otherwise valid marriage between adults who possess legal capacity to marry.
A properly handled court marriage generally requires identity verification, free consent, competent witnesses, agreement on Haq Mehr, solemnization of Nikah, completion of the prescribed Nikah Nama, and registration with the competent authority.

Who Can Contract a Court Marriage?
Eligibility depends on the facts of each matter. In general, the parties must possess legal capacity, give free consent, satisfy the legally prescribed age requirement, and have no legal impediment to the proposed marriage.
Free ConsentNeither party should be acting under force, coercion, fraud or unlawful pressure.

Marital StatusPrevious marriage, divorce or widowhood documents are required if applicable.

Standard Court Marriage Service
PK-Legal & Associates provides a case-specific quotation after confirming the parties’ details and required services. Contact the office for the current all-inclusive fee and exact scope of work.
The quotation may include legal consultation, preparation of affidavits, Nikah arrangements, witnesses where required, completion of the Nikah Nama and registration guidance. Government charges, MRC, translation, notarization, courier and special foreign-document work may be quoted separately.
Marriage Registration Certificate and NADRA Record
After the Nikah, the prescribed Nikah Nama should be registered through the authorized Nikah Registrar and the competent Union Council. Registration creates an official government record and is important for immigration, NADRA record updates, inheritance, insurance and court proceedings, including matters such as wife and child maintenance.
The computerized Marriage Registration Certificate is commonly referred to as the MRC or, informally, the “NADRA marriage certificate.” The marriage itself is registered through the competent local authority; NADRA does not solemnize the Nikah.
Court Marriage Between a Pakistani and a Foreign National
A Pakistani citizen may marry a foreign national in Pakistan after satisfying the applicable legal and documentary requirements. The exact checklist depends on the foreign party’s nationality, religion, marital status, visa position and the authority before which the marriage will be registered.
Foreign documents should be reviewed before travel whenever possible. This helps identify any requirement for a single-status certificate, birth certificate, divorce decree, death certificate, conversion document, certified translation or attestation.
Court Marriage for Overseas Pakistanis
Overseas Pakistanis often visit Pakistan for a limited period and need the Nikah, registration, MRC, translation of Nikahnama and notarization planned efficiently. Documents may be reviewed before arrival so deficiencies can be addressed in advance.
Clients intending to use marriage documents in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Italy, the Gulf region or another country should also confirm the receiving authority’s translation and certification requirements.
